One of the biggest problems with social networking sites is that, while we make new connections and rediscover old friends, we’re hidden from the daylight and relegated to the confines of our homes. As a result, the Nosferatu-like pallor we’ve developed tends to scare off those virtual friends we end up meeting in the real world.
The MagnetU is a short range wireless device that intends to take social networking in a bold new direction: outdoors and under direct sunlight. Users purchase the device, and set up a MagnetU online account, where they detail their interests and personal characteristics. They then take the small device on the go with them. The MagnetU will monitor the surrounding area for other users, and, if a user with similar interests is found, a text will be sent to both. Users receive either a “HOT” (strong match) text, or an “ATTRACTIVE” (less strong match) text, and can proceed to follow up in person, via text, or online.
The MagnetU could be quite beneficial for people with less than socially acceptable interests to find one another. Nobody wants to bring up their undying love of ’80s TV show ‘Cop Rock’ in conversation, only to be met with a horrified grimace of disgust.
