  Twitter’s new recruiting video may not make you feel like working, but, if you’re in your 20s, are sort of nerdy and remember the time you snuck into the indie-cinema to see ‘Rushmore,’ you will feel a nostalgic twinge.

  In the video (after the break), Twitter headquarters are transformed into something of a yearbook, with various teams of employees posing for the film as you would a picture. If you’ve seen any of Wes Anderson’s ‘Rushmore,’ you’ll immediately recognize the recruiting video as a modern day recreation of one of the movie’s most famous scenes. In place of Max Fischer’s Fencing Team and Yankee Racers groups, Twitter employees form teams, such as Infrastructure, Storage, Gardening and Tweet Fleet, and it’s all shot in Wes Anderson’s Futura-stamped style.   ‘Snake,’ the classic game installed on many early cell phones and, most memorably, the TI-83+ calculator, has made a jump to a new platform: YouTube. The recently discovered Easter Egg lets you play ‘Snake’ on a paused or buffering video by simply tapping (or holding) left. Just load up your favorite video on YouTube.com (the trick doesn’t work on embedded video) to try it out. Details are slim on the required settings; some claim you need to press up and left at the same time, some say the video has to be in the ‘Gaming’ category, and some even suggest that the video can be fully loaded. Regardless, most of our attempts were successful, and YouTube has successfully found a way to be an even bigger time-suck. [From: Engadget and Kotaku]

  YouTube Introduces Simple, Cloud-Based Video Editor

  Google recently added a cloud-based video editor on YouTube. It’s not super-advanced, but the YouTube editor does allow users to trim videos they’ve posted, and to stitch together multiple clips from their collection into a single film. When holding the mouse over a thumbnail, a scissors icon appears that lets you cut parts of it you don’t want. You can also add music files from the site’s audio library. Then, just click and drag the thumbnail to a location on the filmstrip running across the bottom of the screen. When you’re done editing, you can preview a lo-res video of your work, and save it to your YouTube collection. Since all this is done “in-cloud,” saving is a fairly easy process, too — although it can take a minute or two for the site to process the video. It’s all a pretty bare bones affair, and transitions and captions are currently out of the question. For your cats-on-chairs megamix video, though, it should be more than enough. [From: CNET News]

  Well, the Internet has won. The last exclusive, nigh-impenetrable institution known as the art world has buckled to the social media cloud. The New York Times reported yesterday that the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation has joined forces with YouTube to create a user-driven biennial of video art, to be exhibited at all four of the Guggenheim’s global outposts. The project, called YouTube Play, encourages budding video artists (or even first-time dabblers) to upload clips of themselves or their work for a chance to cross the gaze of high-end curators.

  Starting today, aspiring artists can submit their videos — only one entry per person, made within the last two years and not extending ten minutes in length — to be assessed by a team of Guggenheim curators. Once the best 200 videos have been selected, a panel of nine judges (composed of experts in the fields of visual arts, music, graphic design, film-making and animation) will filter those submissions down to a pool of twenty, which will then go on display simultaneously at the Solomon R. Guggenheim in New York, the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin, the Guggenheim Bilbao in Spain and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.

  Gesture-Controlled LuminAR Robotic 'Lamp' Is a Personal, Projecting Assistant

  Well, those crazy kids at MIT have done it again. We’re pretty floored by this video (after the jump) of student Natan Linder’s LuminAR robotic assistant, which looks like a desk lamp married to the Terminator’s exoskeleton. And a task lamp was, in fact, Linder’s inspiration for this gesture-driven droid, as he essentially replaced the traditional incandescent bulb with a state-of-the-art projection system.

  We wrote back in January about Light Blue Optics’ interactive projection system Light Touch, which spent six long years in development, and can use any flat surface as a display. Linder’s robot assistant seems to incorporate a very similar pico projector-cum-camera apparatus, and we’d wager that he didn’t have a team of engineers behind him to help build it. The base of the bot contains a wireless computer, which gives real-time access to e-mail and the Web. Like the Light Touch, the integrated camera — which is really an entirely separate component built into a standard bulb socket — tracks the user’s movements, like tapping and swiping, and essentially creates a computer interface wherever one wants. The mechanical swinging arm of the lamp body can even locate a surface unmarred by your desk junk, eliminating your daily excavation for your keyboard.   Alabama recently saw a groundswell of viral videos. Unfortunately for Alabama residents, the stars of these videos were also politicians campaigning for the state’s June 1st primaries. According to Gawker, three candidates — gubernatorial candidate Judge Roy Moore, Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries candidate Dale Peterson and congressional candidate Les Phillip — didn’t fare as well at the voting booth as they did on the Web. Because, while their videos might be funny (for all the wrong reasons), voters were smart enough to realize there wasn’t much behind the platforms.

  Moore, whose video attacked rival candidate Bradley Byrne by questioning his views on the Bible and evolution, garnered only 14-percent of the Republican vote. Peterson, best known for a spaghetti-western influenced spot featuring him on a horse with a rifle rattling off the many “hats” he’s worn, finished third in his primary. Phillip’s harsh words brutally juxtaposed his Navy days with President Barack Obama’s political career and garnered him a solid last place in his race. However, there is hope for one viral video candidate. Republican gubernatorial candidate Tim “It makes sense to me” James, famous for a melodramatic video that contended Alabama’s driver license test should only be offered in English, could be set for a runoff in July pending a recount of Tuesday’s votes.

  A U.S. soldier stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska could be in hot water over a video posted on his Facebook page. According to the Associated Press, Specialist Robert A. Rodriguez is under investigation by the U.S. Army, and was recently ordered to remove the 30-second video, which featured an unidentified voice asking two Iraqi children if they were going to grow up to be terrorists, if they were gay and if they would do certain sexual acts. As of now, it’s not clear whether or not Rodriguez shot the video. Of course, this comes at a bad time for the Army, the Pentagon just unblocked social networking sites for stationed soldiers at the beginning of March.

  You can watch pieces of the clip along with a report from the North Carolina TV station that discovered it in the video after the jump. However, be warned that even an edited version of the clip is disturbing. Even if Rodriguez didn’t shoot the video, posting the clip is still deplorable for somebody who’s representing our country in a foreign land. [From: AP/Huffington Post]

  There’s nothing new about using cell phones as instruments. We’ve seen pop songs covered, entire orchestras of Apple handsets and even a ringtone mobile playing Christmas tunes. What we haven’t seen though, is one person combine several handsets into a makeshift instrument, and become a one-man Franken-band. That is, until we saw this: the Phone Guitar, assembled from two Android phones, two Windows Mobile devices, an iPod touch and what appears to be several rolls of duct tape.

  The creator, who goes by the name Steffest, built the mobile monstrosity as part of a demonstration on cross platform application development. His attempt to build a usable piano sequencer and drum machine app for Android, Windows Mobile and the iPhone OS from the same code failed, but that didn’t stop him from showing off his creation by playing a frighteningly agile version of ‘Cracklin Rosie.’ Check out the video below.   Renting movies via YouTube is still a relatively new idea, but Google is hoping to expand its business (and lessen its reliance on advertising revenue) by allowing users to charge rental fees for uploaded videos. Hunter Walk, head of product management at YouTube, told MediaPost that the company was working on self-service video rentals for individual creators.

  This will offer yet another way for creators to make money from videos they post to YouTube. Currently, Google lets hand-selected users make money via the YouTube Partner Program and Individual Video Partnerships, but the new feature could skip the reliance on ads and clicks, putting the power to monetize directly in the creator’s hands.
