  Hacker Tweets Fake Guns N' Roses Tour Cancellation From Axl Rose's Account

  According to The Hollywood Reporter, Guns N’ Roses fans were duped into believing Axl Rose and the boys had canceled an upcoming European tour when somebody hacked into Rose’s Twitter account. On Sunday, this message appeared on Rose’s rarely used (but verified) Twitter account: “All upcoming Guns N’ Roses dates are officially cancelled. Please contact your place of purchase for any refunds.” Live Nation’s Festival Republic division, which booked GNR’s shows at the Reading and Leeds festivals, quickly refuted the hoax by saying in a statement that the Twitter account had been hacked. But the message has been retweeted more than 100 times, so we imagine there are some folks who still think GNR bailed on these dates. Honestly, we’re just surprised that so many people still care enough about GNR — since Axl now looks like the host of ‘Tales From the Crypt’. [From: The Hollywood Reporter and Axl Rose's Twitter]

  Twitter Tweet Buttons Launching This Week

  Expect sharing links on Twitter to become a lot easier this week, with the launch of a new, “official” tweet button. The Twitter-approved button allows users to easily retweet articles, and also features a counter that keeps track of how many other users have tweeted a given URL. The button, which comes in three different versions (110×20, 55×20, 55×63), consists of a single line of code that can be embedded within any website. Mashable went ahead and successfully embedded the standard button, thought it looks as if only a handful of accounts are capable of actually using the feature to retweet articles.

  At first glance, it would appear that Twitter’s newest feature would pose a direct threat to Tweetmeme, which already produces most of the tweet buttons you see across the Web. But it’s unlikely that Twitter would sucker punch Tweetmeme without discussing it beforehand. Mashable speculates that the site may have struck some sort of deal with the developer, although, at this point, the details of any potential deal remain unclear, and Twitter has yet to comment.   Where many men have disappointed their girlfriends by offering casual, lackluster proposals, Digg’s Matt Van Horn secured a definite “yes” from his girlfriend, Lauren, on Saturday by streaming his surprise proposal online so that their friends and family could watch. Fearing that Lauren would expect the proposal if he took her to their favorite spot overlooking San Francisco, Van Horn arranged for a friend to take Lauren there, where he hid behind a rock with another friend, filming everything to a Qik video stream.

  Before the proposal, Van Horn rigged the Qik stream to sync to his Foursquare and Twitter accounts. So, when he did check into the park on Foursquare, the URL of the check-in was automatically posted to the Qik stream, which then posted the check-in to his Twitter account. Got that? Since Lauren’s phone was already set up to receive Van Horn’s Twitter alerts, she shortly saw that he was at the same park and turned around, shocked to see her boyfriend on his knees proposing to her.

  Where do you go if you want to report a flasher in a flash? Under most circumstances, you’d probably call the police. Under more pressing circumstances, though, you might want to take a page from Nay Khun’s book, and go straight to Twitter.

  Khun, you see, was riding Boston’s underground transit system on Wednesday afternoon, when he noticed a strange looking man seated near him. The man, as it turns out, was far from your garden variety subway crazy. According to the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority, Kuhn happened to catch the rider while he was in the middle of “fidgeting with his crotch area with his zipper open and his penis exposed.” Instead of watching in awe, though, Khun raced to Twitter, where he posted a photo of the exhibitionist, along with the caption, “pervert on the 2nd car of the red line … help me report him.” Eventually, word got around to the Boston police, who identified the man as Lawrence McGuire, a known offender. By Friday, MBTA officials tracked down, and arrested McGuire on the charges of “open and gross lewdness.”

  Nearly two months ago, MTV launched a nationwide contest to find the network’s first-ever Twitter Jockey. The ideal ‘TJ,’ the network claimed back in June, would be “dynamic, engaging and energized,” and wouldn’t be afraid to directly engage MTV’s tweener audience on Twitter. (Think Quddus, minus the face time and manorexia.) Over the course of the summer, challenges were held, tears were probably shed, and our interest evaporated faster than MTV’s integrity. On Sunday, though, the network formerly known as Music Television finally anointed the world’s next John Sencio. And, no it’s not Snooki.

  So, who’s the lucky winner? That would be the appropriately named Gabi Gregg, a 23-year-old Mount Holyoke grad, and proud owner of the fashion blog ‘Young, Fat and Fabulous.’ As the AP reports, Gregg claimed the position after coming out on top of Sunday night’s nationwide vote, and will now devote her energies toward regularly reporting on pop culture news via MTV’s Twitter and Facebook accounts. The lines between ‘TJ’ and ‘glorified secretary’ still seem a bit blurry to us, but, for a young blogger looking to reach a larger audience, it’s probably a great way to launch a fledgling media career — even if it means having to spend your days pandering to Bieberites and ‘Camp Rock’ devotees.   Twitter’s new recruiting video may not make you feel like working, but, if you’re in your 20s, are sort of nerdy and remember the time you snuck into the indie-cinema to see ‘Rushmore,’ you will feel a nostalgic twinge.

  In the video (after the break), Twitter headquarters are transformed into something of a yearbook, with various teams of employees posing for the film as you would a picture. If you’ve seen any of Wes Anderson’s ‘Rushmore,’ you’ll immediately recognize the recruiting video as a modern day recreation of one of the movie’s most famous scenes. In place of Max Fischer’s Fencing Team and Yankee Racers groups, Twitter employees form teams, such as Infrastructure, Storage, Gardening and Tweet Fleet, and it’s all shot in Wes Anderson’s Futura-stamped style.   When recent Twitter convert Kanye West chose to follow the account of a kid named Steven Holmes, everyone struggled to comprehend why Mr. West would want to follow a relatively anonymous student — and no one else. Surely this kid must be the world’s most rabid Kanye fan, right? Or perhaps he’s another struggling musician who’s been chomping at the bit for his one shot at fame? Well, not exactly.

  “The funny thing is I like his music but I’m not his biggest fan,” the media student tells his local Coventry Telegraph newspaper. “Before this weekend I thought it would be cool to have a celebrity following me on Twitter but now I think it’s really not worth it.” Ever since being anointed as Kanye’s “Chosen One,” Holmes has accumulated upwards of 3,000 followers, and has been barraged with messages from aspiring artists, filmmakers and musicians, “as if I have some sort of influence over Kanye West.” He’s also received a slew of interview requests from major media outlets like the BBC, New York Magazine and CNN. And he’s refused every single one. “I didn’t want to talk to any of them,” Holmes says. “Fame has never appealed to me. It’s vacuous.”

  Last week, Twitter unveiled a new feature, called ‘Suggestions For You,’ which suggests accounts you might want to follow. Located as a tab on the ‘Find People’ page, the new feature uses an algorithm that examines the Twitterers you follow, and, based on several factors, suggests folks that might interest you. Basically, it’s the same thing Facebook has been doing for some time with its equally annoying ‘People You May Know’ capability. As part of this feature, you’ll also see recommendations for similar microbloggers on the Twitter profiles that you view. If you follow movie critic A, you might also like to follow movie critic B.

  We understand the intent behind this idea. As Mashable reports, ‘Suggestions For You’ could keep users engaged with Twitter, making it much easier for them to sift through the millions of accounts on the social networking site. But, in many cases, if we’re not following somebody or aren’t “friends” with them, there’s a good reason behind it: we don’t want to. [From: Twitter Blog and Mashable]

  Bad news, Evil Corporations: Twitter tweeps aren’t your shills! A study by digital marketing agency 360i reveals that only a sliver of consumer tweets forward branding messages. It notes that “more than 90-percent of tweets originate from consumers — and only 8-percent are authored by marketers.” Conversely, only 12-percent of all tweets mention a brand. (Click here for the full PDF report.)

  When tweets do mention a brand, they’re usually talking about digital culture, with the top five mentions being Twitter itself, Apple, Google, YouTube and Microsoft. Those brand mentions are usually informational in nature (e.g., “French Politicians Ban Twitter From Heated Legislative Debate“), or about using the brand in question, while about “one-fifth of tweets mentioning brands demonstrate an outward opinion of the brand.”
