  Hey, remember this thing called the Mac Mini? Apparently Apple thought there was still some demand for its only monitor-less, stand-alone box, and decided to give it a 2010 makeover with the now-standard aluminum unibody possessed by the rest of the Mac family. The main reason that the old Mac Mini was such a total suck piece of hardware was that, while relatively inexpensive compared to the rest of the Apple line, you had to buy either an outrageously expensive Cinema Display or third-party monitor. (But, pshaw, we all know that you can’t mix and match with Apple’s aesthetic.) Plus, the wee box had no built-in connectivity to your TV.

  While the people of Haiti are struggling to find survivors and loved ones, not to mention food, shelter, and water, many of the rest of us are simply trying to wrap our heads around the level of sheer destruction and incomprehensible death toll. Like the tsunami of 2004 that killed almost 300,000 people, the scope of the tragedy in Haiti is beyond words, tears, and human understanding. And while the more vile members of our society are going on television and blaming a supposed Haitian pact with the devil for this natural disaster, most of the rest of us are straining to grasp the magnitude of the situation, and wondering how we can help.

  Those simply seeking a better understanding can turn to Google, which through a partnership with GeoEye, is bringing up-to-date satellite imagery of Port-au-Prince and the surrounding areas to Google Earth. You can download a KML overlay file for Google Earth that contains photographs taken just yesterday. Once you’ve downloaded the file, Google will provide automatic updates as new images become available.
