  We’re still waiting for flying cars, laser guns and teleportation devices, but it looks like we can scratch one childhood dream off the list: touchable holograms. According to the NTDTV report posted after the jump, researchers at Japan’s Tokyo University have managed to concoct holograms that not only react to touch, but that also create the sensation of touch, itself. Apparently, and not surprisingly, an integral part of the system is Nintendo’s Wiimote technology, which senses user input. That’s right nerdlings, with this contraption, you could not only talk to that Princess Leia hologram, but you could actually lovingly caress her cinnamon bun-like tresses.   We all know that geeks come in all shapes and sizes, but did you ever try to figure out what unifies them? What key concepts bring one to another? Is it a love for arcane knowledge? An obsessiveness with detail? Or, are they all just unified by a love of seeing Princess Leia in her metal bikini? As it turns out, it’s not quite so simple, as the above chart from Ibrahim Evsan shows.

  Evsan is a blogger and the author of a German book called ‘The Fixation of Code’ which, among other things, examines people’s obsession with computers and technical things. This map (click the image above to view the larger version) he’s created applies a sort of ‘Schoolhouse Rock!’ aesthetic to the idea, showing that while a film geek may have different obsessions than a comic book geek, chances are they both really dig Batman.
