  What do you see when you look at a busted cell phone or computer monitor? Probably a heap of junk. But as the saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s… art. That’s the view of a burgeoning number of artists who are repurposing old electronics into works of art.

  These objects of geeky creativity might never hang in a museum next to an Italian masterwork, but that’s fine by us. After all, who needs the Louvre when you have the Internet? Here’s a few of our favorites, culled from the famed galleries of the Web:

  We’ve heard of Facebook leading to arrests, but now there’s a flip side to the story of social networking and the law. Today, a man can thank Facebook for keeping him out of jail. According to The New York Times, defense lawyers used Rodney Bradford’s status update as an alibi when he was arrested in connection with an October 17th robbery. Lawyers say the update, which read “Where’s my pancakes,” was posted from a computer in the Harlem apartment of Bradford’s father at the exact time the robbery in question occurred.

  Lawyers subpoenaed the site’s records to make sure Bradford’s story held water. It did, and the charges were dropped (although Bradford faces previous robbery charges, too). However, some worry that anybody could’ve entered the man’s user name and password and posted the update for him. “[Teenagers]…could develop an alibi,” said Joseph Pollini, a law teacher at John Jay College. “They watch television, the movies, there is a multitude of reasons why someone of that age would have the knowledge to do a crime like that.”

  While we don’t quite understand it, many people like to add some personality to their cars by way of vanity plates. The plates usually read something corny like “2KOOL4U,” “MYRIDE1,” or, in one Alabama man’s case, “XXXXXXX.” That’s because, when Scottie Roberson was a young man, he built custom cars under the pseudonym “Racer X,” and because his favorite number is seven.

  While this whole concept of vanity tags does puzzle us, these plates shouldn’t be any problem. Except, in the nearby city of Birmingham where police, whenever they find an illegally parked car that doesn’t have tags, write down seven Xs on the parking ticket. When those citations are entered into the computer system, Roberson’s name — of course — pops up. According to The Birmingham News, Roberson has received more than $19,000 in parking tickets since last year. Sometimes, he says, he’ll find as many as 10 tickets from 10 different places in his mailbox.

  Facebook is great for staying in touch with people or reconnecting with lost friends or family. Apparently, though, it’s the perfect forum for incestuous innuendo, too.

  In a case that would make even John Phillips blush, a Lancaster County, Pennsylvania man has been accused of sexually propositioning his own estranged 13-year-old daughter on Facebook. 39-year-old John Forehand was one of five accused online sexual predators recently arrested by Philadelphia police. Forehand, who hadn’t been in contact with his daughter for 10 years, allegedly proposed meeting her for sex, telling her that “not many other fathers and daughters are this brave, so not many of them are so lucky to experience all these pleasures.” (Ew.) He also called himself “Bad Daddy” online. The girl, being, um, normal, told her mom about it, and authorities arrested the man at the place and time that he had proposed to meet her.

  Our request that our funeral be an orgy of booze, funk, and mocking has earned us more than a few eye-rolls and a dismissive, “nerd,” or two. From now on though we have an example to point to when people say we’re ridiculous.

  In a creative, yet incredibly geeky gesture, a man decided to bury his brother, Alan, in his 1990s-era SPARCstation. The high-end workstation from Sun was gutted and engraved with the deceased’s name, the years he lived, and the words, “Beam me up Scotty, I’m done here.” Alan was cremated and his ashes placed inside the case, which mourners were encouraged to adorn with messages and memories written on Post-It notes.

  Man Builds Biological Virus Sculptures From Salvaged PCs

  As the saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Well, that’s certainly true for sculptor Forrest McCluer, who salvaged 30 computers from a garbage pile outside an office building and made it his personal mission to turn that junk into art. Now, one series in his ‘The 30 Computers Project’ brings a whole new meaning to term computer virus. McCluer used some of the discarded computer parts to build sculptures of biological viruses.

  Judging by the pictures McCluer posts alongside his models, these sculptures are pretty accurate. There’s the ‘Transformer ‘Virus,’ which looks like the common cold and uses yellow PC transformers. Then, there’s the ‘Capacitor Virus,’ which represents the rhinovirus and uses, of course, assorted PC capacitors. With all the talk about swine flu lately, it’s nice to know that these viruses can’t harm you. [From: The 30 Computers Project, via Neatorama]

  Sometimes, a picture says it all. This one, though, might need some explaining. According to the Next Web, the words inked on the man’s arm are what appear on a Windows machine’s monitor when it crashes. For geeks the world over, the ‘Blue Screen of Death’ is a terrifying sight to behold, and this unnamed young man decided he would like to have it permanently displayed — slightly off-center (check out the full size image after the break) — on his body.

  Look, we love computers and spend most of our waking lives plugged in, but is it really necessary to permanently ink yourself with Microsoft’s failure? We can only wish that the death of this man’s PC were instead the death of his brand of decades-old hipster irony. [From: The Next Web, via urlesque]

  While repairing a Fairfield, Connecticut man’s computer, an Apple Store employee discovered something horrible hidden on the hard drive. No, it wasn’t the new Jonas Brothers album. That’s only enough to bring shame, but the images discovered on the Power Mac G5 brought an arrest.

  According to the Stamford Advocate, 36-year-old Raymond Miller was arrested at the Stamford Town Center Apple Store after an employee working at the Genius Bar allegedly discovered photographs of naked 10- to 13-year-old girls on his computer. Miller brought his computer to the store because he was having problems with images overwriting other images. According to court documents, the employee discovered the explicit photos while searching for the computer problem, and contacted police at the mall. Miller was sent to jail and charged with one count of possession of child pornography, his bond being set at $75,000. Police are searching the computer for other evidence, and The Advocate reports that more charges could follow, pending the investigation.

  Although the tools of war have evolved at an astonishing rate over the course of the modern age, the classic man with a gun hasn’t changed much since the 1700s. Now that we’ve finished building bigger and bigger guns, however, we’ve turned our research muscle back towards doing our best to improve that basic unit of battle: the infantry man.

  The Land Warrior system is currently getting its first large-scale test in Afghanistan, with hundreds of the wearable computers deployed to team leaders and vehicle commanders. The system, which includes a viewfinder for identifying friendlies and hostile targets, a thumb keypad, and other gadgets, is one of the more expensive and cumbersome tools at the disposal of the modern soldier.
