  Ropid, the Dancing Humanoid Robot: Creepy or Cute?

  Yesterday, our pals over at Engadget reported on Ropid, the humanoid robot that proudly parades around, runs in place, and hops a quarter of its own height (video above). Today, more videos emerged of the little guy, and some of the Switched staff was torn. Some of us were horrified, especially after seeing earlier in the week the Army-produced, disembodied pair of legs that can run in place and clearly points to a robot (r)evolution. Others saw the big eyes and rotating torso (which help with balance), and became charmed by the pint-sized, enthusiastically accommodating bot. We took an office poll, but be sure to chime in with your own comments. Ropid: Adorable droid or creepy computerized terror?

  • Thomas H: “Creepy. Imagine waking up with that standing next to you, dancing a horrible jig.”
  • Terrence: “Creepy. It’s subservience makes me uncomfortable. I know it’s only a robot, but when someone asks you to jump you don’t just nod and do it.”
  • Leila: “Adorable. Look at those big eyes. It’s like Pinocchio, but without the lying.”
  • Lee: “Good Lord. Consider this my notice. If you need me, I’ll be in my heavily fortified lean-to, deep in the woods.” Guess that’s creepy, right, Lee?
  • Warren: “Adorable for a few seconds… until it starts goose stepping.”
  • Matt Z.: “Creepy. Behind those saucer-sized eyes is a droid waiting to jump adorably on your corpse.”
  • Josh F. (Executive Producer): “Totally cute.”

  We’re hesitant to tell anybody about the USB Computer Prankster, but since most of us work from home here [Ed. Note: Thanks, Lee], and thus aren’t afraid of this thing being used on us, we’ll just selfishly throw the rest of you to the wolves. While this little doohickey might appear to be a run-of-the-mill USB drive, it’s far more insidious. Those little switches on the side don’t merely engage the Caps Lock function, keyboard, or mouse, but rather make them go totally haywire.

  A cyber saboteur can sneak to your cubicle, plug this sucker in an out-of-the-way USB port, roll back the time delay, engage the switches, and escape — by the time you’re back at your desk with a fresh cup of coffee. Moments later, you’re dragging a very important document into a very important folder, and your mouse cursor will lose control and bounce around the screen like a chihuahua on a meth binge.

  As the old saying goes, hindsight is 20-20. That’s the only explanation Sir Tim Berners-Lee offers for a mistake he made while designing the Internet. During an interview at a technology symposium in Washington Thursday, Berners-Lee said if he could go back and change one thing, he would leave out the “//” that appears at the beginning of a Web address. According to Beet.TV, the slashes are unnecessary, as long as there’s an “http:” at the beginning of the URL. “Really, if you think about it, you don’t need the double slash,” Berners-Lee said. “Think of the amount of print that’d be saved if I just removed the double slash.”

  The man often credited with creating the Internet (no, not Al Gore) explained the mistake this way: “It seemed like a good idea at the time.” Seeing as we’ve used that excuse, ourselves, innumerable instances, and it’s never once worked, we’ve no other choice but to confirm that Berners-Lee is, in fact, a genius.
