  Utah Attorney General Tweets About Killer's Execution

  After spending 25 years on death row, convicted murderer Ronnie Lee Gardner was given the choice of how he would like to be killed. He could either take the more modern, less messy route, via lethal injection, or he could go out in front of a firing squad. Ultimately, Gardner chose the old school route, but Utah’s attorney general took a decidedly more modern route in publicizing the man’s demise.

  Moments after Gardner was killed by police firing squad, attorney general Mark Shurtleff took to his Twitter account. “I just gave the go ahead to Corrections Director to proceed with Gardner’s execution,” Shurtleff tweeted. “May God grant him the mercy he denied his victims.” The tweet was the second of a three-part series that the attorney general posted over the course of the execution. Earlier in the day, the attorney general expressed noticeably less exuberance about the event, tweeting, “A solemn day. Barring a stay by Sup Ct [US Supreme Court], & with my final nod, Utah will use most extreme power & execute a killer. Mourn his victims. Justice”. His final tweet promoted an online stream of his post-execution press conference, which would go live, Shurtleff wrote, “as soon as I’m told Gardner is dead.”

  Who exactly the Iranian Cyber Army is isn’t exactly clear, but it’s believed the attack may be a retaliation by government loyalists for the micro-blogging service’s role in protests following the controversial re-”election” of Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad this summer. TechCrunch writes that Google searches for “Twitter” last night revealed the following message translated from Farsi/Persian:

  “In the name of God, As an Iranian this is a reaction to Twitter’s interference sly which was U.S. authorities ordered in the internal affairs of my country…”

  Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is, to put it politely, interesting. The multi-billionaire media magnate-turned-politician is more famous for his countless scandals and affairs than he is for his repeat performances as Prime Minister. He has compared himself to Mother Teresa and Gandhi, argued he was “more equal” in the eyes of the law, and claimed to have been “appointed by God,” while fending off charges of corruption and bribery, as well as reported trysts with underage girls. So it’s a little shocking that it took a third stint as PM before someone managed to assault the controversial leader with a blunt object.

  What’s not shocking is Berlusconi seeking to blame Facebook and a “campaign of hatred” for the assault with a deadly statuette that left the Prime Minister short two teeth and a pint of blood. A free speech backlash has been prompted by messages of support and fan clubs on social networking services like Facebook and Twitter for Massimo Tartaglia, Berlusconi’s attacker. On Wednesday, Interiors Minister Roberto Maroni suggested tighter Net controls to prevent a “dangerous spiral of emulation.”

  Basketball player Allen Iverson has been detailing his arduous return from a back injury, and his hopes of landing on a new NBA team, with almost daily updates on Twitter. Today, he scooped ESPN, FOX Sports, and every other sports media outlet by announcing his return, and his new team, when he tweeted, “God Chose Memphis as the place that I will continue my career.”

  Twitter’s reputation is certainly shifting, particularly as the site receives more and more recognition as an actual news outlet. But, even though the tweets should endear Iverson to Grizzlies fans, he might not receive the warmest welcome from the Memphis writers he beat to the punch. They might prefer that he make headlines on the court, and not by schooling people off of it. [From: Mashable]
