  While it’s becoming increasingly common for people to leave suicide notes on their Facebook pages, the circumstances surrounding Stephen Garcia’s death in particular still gives us the creeps.

  Distraught over the separation from his ex-girlfriend, the 25-year-old California native was apparently on a court-ordered visit with their 9-month-old son Wyatt when he drove to an isolated dirt trail in the San Bernardino Mountains and then killed the boy before killing himself in an undisclosed fashion.

  Eight hours later, a suicide note, last will and testament, along with a photo collage of Garcia and his son, appeared on his Facebook profile.

  After a dearth of old-school, English-language reporting on yesterday’s 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Haiti, people were naturally turning to Twitter to share photos and news of this horrific event. Even the New York Times does not appear to have correspondents anywhere near Port-au-Prince, or even in the country; the top story on NYTimes.com today was reported from Santo Domingo and Mexico City. Therefore, it has fallen upon citizen journalists to get the info out.

  The Web exploded yesterday with TwitPics and outpourings of sympathy as incoming reports told that hospitals, schools, and the National Palace had been destroyed by the massive quake. The Times’ Lede Blog had to resort last night to posting retweets from people on the island, save some photos by Tequila Minsky, who happened to be staying in Port-au-Prince at the time. These developments are not dissimilar from the preponderance of tweets that followed the quake in Eureka, California on Saturday, when most major news organizations had the weekend off.

  Seeking to disseminate information more quickly, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is turning to Twitter for a little help. According to Ecopolitology, a group of seismologists led by Dr. Paul Earle recently created an application, dubbed the Twitter Earthquake Detection Project, that monitors tweets for earthquake-related keywords. The idea grew from the deluge of tweets that quickly hit the site during a 2008 California quake. After confirming the reported activity, seismologists send an e-mail alert that lists the earthquake’s magnitude, location, and depth below the surface, as well as the number and location of the tweets.

  While this project could help track quakes outside the reach of a seismograph, it does have limitations. Typically, a person won’t include much hard data in a tweet. Also, there are plenty of tweets that casually use earthquake terms and would need to be filtered out. All that being said, if used in tandem with other hard scientific data, the Twitter Earthquake Detection Project could become a valuable resource. There really is no faster way to collect and send information. And that’s not to mention the project’s potential as an emergency communication tool.

  Google Officially Debuts Nexus One Android Phone

  Last year, T-Mobile introduced its G1 mobile, the first handheld to utilize the Android operating system. Since that debut, analysts and spectators have been anxiously waiting for the next stage in Android devices, particularly the much-discussed Nexus One Google phone.

  Google announced the phone officially today in California. The presentation traced the history of Android and included detailed information about the size of the Nexus One (”No thicker than a number 2 pencil, no heavier than a Swiss army knife.”), its features (GPS, accelerometer, light, and proximity sensor), and its hardware (1 GHz Snapdragon). The Nexus crew also provided insight into some upgrades from the early G1 models, including “better news and weather widgets” and heightened voice capabilities.

  Okay, technically Google’s Nexus One is not part of the CES product barrage. The latest Android handset is to be officially unveiled tomorrow at a press event in Google’s hometown of Mountain View, California. The phone features a large, high-resolution screen like the Droid, but packs a much faster processor and twice the RAM, making it speedier than the already blazing Verizon flagship model. It’s expected to cost $179 with a two-year T-Mobile contract, or $529 unlocked, and be available (by invitation only) starting tomorrow.

  If something held you back from pulling the trigger on the Droid, or you are tempted by the iPhone but don’t want to sign over your soul to Apple, it might be worth checking out this handset. The phone is sleek, if not jaw-dropping, and is thinner than the iPhone. Sadly, multi-touch isn’t present, even though it is officially supported in Android 2.1, thanks to Apple’s patent on the technology in the U.S. That’s a real shame, since the Nexus One lacks a physical keyboard.

  Matthew White, of Sacramento, California, has found himself in a rather unfortunate situation; he’s been accused of downloading child pornography. On the advice of his public defender, White is pleading guilty in hopes of cutting his potential 20-year sentence down to three and a half years. After serving his time, White will have to serve 10 years of probation and register as a sex offender.

  What makes this unfortunate is that the 22-year-old White claims he downloaded the child pornography on accident from the file-sharing service LimeWire. According to White, he was attempting to download a ‘Girls Gone Wild’ video two years ago, but when he opened the files, instead discovered images of underage girls. White claims to have immediately deleted the images and never looked back — at least until the FBI showed up at his door a year later.
