  'Delete Your Account' Helps You End Your Facebook, Myspace Account

  Online companies have slowly made account deletion exasperatingly difficult (if not impossible) to accomplish, and success may only follow hours of trial-and-error-induced hysterics. While GetHuman has been guiding frustrated consumers through the maze of support lines for sometime, it was only recently that we spotted a similar service that walked users around the hair-pulling experience of expunging profiles, or accounts, from clingy Web sites.

  The plainly titled Delete Your Account does exactly what you think: shows you the steps required to remove your presence from various Web sites. Wherever possible, it offers a link to the page where the deletion process begins.

  RockYou App Site Hacked, 32M Accounts Compromised

  RockYou, maker of irritating apps for Facebook and other social networks, along with add-ons like ‘Glittertext’ for MySpace, has suffered a major security breach that has potentially exposed e-mails and passwords of some 32 million users. Security firm Imperva contacted RockYou to alert it to a flaw it had found in its database of account information. But Imperva’s warning was too late. At least one hacker has already claimed to have gained access and posted portions of the stolen data to prove it.

  According to the hacker’s posting, he obtained the account info for exactly 32,603,388 of RockYou’s roughly 55 million users. What’s worse though, is that the information for accounts on the site was stored in an unencrypted text file — including e-mail addresses and passwords. If you have a RockYou account and tend to use the same password for everything, we strongly suggest you change the password on all of your accounts. Now.

  It used to be that computer viruses were quiet, personal experiences that only you, your family, and your data were privy to. But modern crooks have found that social networks make an excellent tool for spreading malware. An unfortunate side effect of this is that now friends and family all know when we’ve been infected.

  These malicious programs and scams often hijack your Facebook or Twitter account and then turn around and use your good name to deluge your network of friends with messages attempting to lure them into the same scam. The messages sent out by your account announce to all the world that you’ve been hacked. Maybe that description is a bit harsh, but it’s how many perceive the infringement. Jodi Chapman used the words, “You feel like a total idiot,” when she described the experience of having her Twitter account hacked to the New York Times. Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet and American Life Project, told the paper, “I’m worried that people will think I communicate this way,” after his Twitter account sent messages containing a link and the text, “Hi, is this you? LOL.”

  After he heard the latest news about one of his players and Twitter, we’re sure that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, from his towering New York office building, gave out a great barbaric yawp: “I told you so!” According to Mashable, New York Jets wide receiver David Clowney has had his Twitter account hacked within the past 24 hours. Unlike when hackers took over a number of high-profile celebrity accounts earlier this year, the tweets sent from Clowney’s account aren’t funny. They’re downright mean and vulgar. Although Clowney has apparently regained control of his account and has issued an apology to his fans, the damage is done. The hacker directed a number of expletive-filled tweets at some of Clowney’s 6,700 followers.

  Aside from the tweet above, Clowney hasn’t yet commented on the attack. According to an Associated Press report on ESPN, the Jets confirmed Monday that his account was hacked, but team officials didn’t comment further. Seeing as he was benched earlier in the year for complaining about his playing time via Twitter, we’d suggest that Clowney just cut his losses and give up on the service, altogether.   Twitter enthusiast Drew Olanoff has been raising money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation and Livestrong by allowing netizens to blame his Hodgkin’s Lymphoma for all the ills of world. Apparently, this hasn’t enough for the philanthropist, so he has decided to auction off his Twitter account, @Drew, for charity. Olanoff had to clear the sale with Evan Williams, one of the founders of Twitter, since the site expressly forbids the sale of usernames for financial gain. Since the money will be going to charity, Olanoff was given an exception and bidding for @Drew began.

  Having decided he wanted to trade in his clunky @DrewFromTV account, Drew Carey put in an impressive $25,000 bid for the account. Ten minutes later, the ‘Price is Right‘ host upped the ante, declaring, “I’ll up my donation to LIVESTRONG to $100k if I get 100k followers by Nov 9th” (the date that the auction ends). Since making that declaration Saturday night, @DrewFromTV has seen his list of followers more than double from roughly 13,000 to over 32,000 as of Monday morning.

  The Internet does strange things to people, and apparently, to bridges as well.

  It all started when a Twitter account was set up for the Tower Bridge across London’s Thames River. The account announced when the drawbridge was opened or closed to allow river traffic to pass. The Telegraph writes that the resulting repetitive Tweets (i.e. “I am opening for the SB Gladys, which is passing downstream.”) inspired someone to create an account for London Bridge, and immediately began taunting the @towerbridge Twitter account.

  In an attempt to elicit a reaction from the official Tower Bridge account, ImLondonBridge started firing off Tweets like, “Hey @towerbridge. When are you going to do something again? You’re even more boring when you’re just sitting there. Yawn.” Tower Bridge had no comment.
